Alberobello

Alberobello is the heart of the Trulli Valley and is known as the “Trulli Capital”.

Today Alberobello is a picturesque agricultural and tourist center largely formed by trulli, which, in addition to a faint fairy-tale air, give a great architectural interest. The name of the city comes from the Latin “Silva Arboris Belli” or “Wood of the Tree of War”. The word “trullo” comes from the Greek tholos or “dome”, it is a circular central plant with a conical roof resting on a square base. At its summit there is a dome shaped like a cone made of chiancarelle, limestone stones also cut into dry concentric circles and locked at the apex by a decorative pinnacle. The houses are built in dry, without mortar or other glue;

The trulli were built by peasants in order to be able to reside in the area, but with the responsibility of the Count not to use any type of mortar because at the time the kingdom had sent inspectors to control the territory, it was enough to expel the colon demolishing the house.

Despite this ban, the population grew has become a great community.
