Castellana Caves

The visit to the speleological system of the grotte di castellana, discovered by Franco anelli on 23 January 1938 and subsequently explored along with Vito Matarrese, unfolds along two itineraries offering a myriad of spectacular concretions, stalactites, stalagmites, curtains and columns, with the help of guides.
The short itinerary, 1 km long for about 50 minutes, reaches the Cave of the Precipice and ends in the grave Cave, the first cave and the only one communicating with the outside.
The second itinerary, 3 km long for about 2 hours, reaches the last cave of the system, the White Cave, defined for the whiteness of its concretions, “The most splendid in the world”.
In addition to the tourist route, the Castellana Caves feature a number of secondary ramifications, like the North-West Branch, which is the upstream continuation of the karst system, or the Angolo Inacantato, The Piccolo Paradiso and the Voragini, which are the small tributaries of the ancient riverbed hitherto known. Other environments include the ramifications lying beneath and those parallel to the main path.
